If yours is a news related blog, you might’ve known about the value of Google News which showcases your articles to a huge readership and thus drives awesome traffic to your blog. In order to get your news blog listed in Google News index, there are several technical requirements which need to be met.
The first criteria that needs to be matched is the article URL. The URL for each article/post should contain a unique number consisting of atleast 3 digits.
Ex: Google can’t crawl URLs like Instead, you need to use URL that looks like
Also keep in mind that if the only number in the article consists of an isolated 4-digit number that starts with 199 or 200, Google News won’t be able to crawl it. However, this particular rule is waived with News sitemaps. And so blogs do have chance to enter the Google News index as they can have a Google News Sitemap.
News Sitemap Requirements
  • Your site needs to be verified in Google Webmaster Tools inorder to enter the Google News Index.
  • Session ID’s in URL’s shouldn’t be included.
  • The sitemap should contain URLs for all articles published in the last 3 days of time.
  • A News sitemap shouldn’t contain more than 1000 URLs.
  • You need to input your article publication date in W3C format, including a timestamp.
How to Create a News Sitemap?
If yours is a wordpress blog, the easiest way to create News sitemap is by installing the Google News Sitemap Generator plugin. The plugin follows all the Google guidelines mentioned above and so you don’t need to worry about including your posts regularly in the sitemap. Keywords for news sitemap are auto-generated from categories and post tags.
Once the news sitemap is generated, copy the URL of your news sitemap and suggest your site to Google news.
Also, do remember that your blog should be a multi-author blog in order to get entry into the Google News index as it doesn’t allow single author blogs.
